U.S. Navy Ship Arrives at Georgian Port Where Russia Has Troops

Sept. 5 (Bloomberg) -- The flagship of the U.S. navy's 6th Fleet anchored off Georgia's Black Sea port of Poti today, about 10 kilometers from a post manned by Russian peacekeeping forces following Georgia's five-day war with Russia.
The USS Mount Whitney sailed into Poti harbor with a cargo of humanitarian aid, Khatia Dzhindzhikhadze, a spokeswoman for the U.S. embassy in the Georgian capital Tbilisi, said by phone from Poti.
The U.S. has sent three navy ships to deliver $37 million in aid to Georgia since the fighting ended with Russia over the separatist region of South Ossetia. The presence of U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organization ships in the Black Sea has further strained relations with Russia already chilled by Western condemnation of the conflict in Georgia.
Andrei Nesterenko, a spokesman for Russia's Foreign Ministry, said in televised comments that the arrival of the Mount Whitney ``raises questions'' about whether the ship conforms to the 1936 Montreux Convention, which sets out rules for the passage of military vessels through the Dardanelles and Bosporus straits to the Black Sea.
Nesterenko also raised doubts about the U.S. decision to use warships to deliver humanitarian aid. Military vessels like the Mount Whitney ``could hardly deliver a large amount of humanitarian aid,'' he said.
Buffer Zones
U.S. aid to Georgia has included water, blankets, baby food and toiletries intended for people displaced by the fighting.
Russia has said its peacekeepers in Poti are acting in compliance with a European Union-brokered cease-fire agreement that ended the fighting over South Ossetia. Peacekeepers are posted in two buffer zones that extend into Georgia from South Ossetia and Abkhazia, two breakaway regions whose independence Russia recognized on Aug. 26. Poti is located outside the Abkhaz buffer zone.
Shota Utiashvili, a spokesman for Georgia's Interior Ministry, said the Poti checkpoints violate the cease-fire.
U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney yesterday assured Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili of U.S. support for its efforts to rebuild following the war, after President George W. Bush pledged $1 billion in aid a day earlier.
Cheney also renewed U.S. backing for Georgia's bid to join NATO. The alliance in April agreed that Georgia will eventually become a member, but declined to put its bid on a fast track.
The North Atlantic Council, the alliance's key political decision-making body, will visit Tbilisi on Sept. 15-16, Georgian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Khatuna Iosava said in an e-mailed statement. NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer will chair the meeting, she said.

It boggles the mind to know that the (manipulated) media is bendiing over backwards and doing cartwheels whilst balancing a spoon on its nose to try to convince the peons that Georgia is the victim.
I look on the proceedings with a bemused look on my face.
So much for US/Israeli battle strategy and hardware. 
Israel's embarrassed enough as it is over their defeat in Lebanon two years ago. And now Georgia! Israel is trying to play their part in this down, and do a 'u'-turn.
And now, in defeat, the retreating Israeli/US-trained and armed Georgian aggressors are venting their frustrations out on helpless civilians. How quintessentially 'American' this type of 'war' has become.
At least it seems unlikely those US/Israeli trained thugs will be able to get their hands on the citizens of Russia so they can rape and torture them as they typically do.
May the truth about Israel's involvement in all this continue to spread despite the difficulties of the media being all-but completely managed by Bush's handlers.
And a big raspberry for the gung-ho steroid-pumping loonies from the US who showed the Georgians how to get their arses kicked and then high-tailed it leaving them to their fate. |
